Maximising Ecosystem Services in Urban Environments (MEaSURE)

Abstract

Urban environments are home to the majority of people on the planet and so ensuring these systems provide healthy, productive and resilient environments is critical. Green infrastructure - which we define as a network of multi-functional green space and other green features - is a key component of urban systems and the main reservoirs of much urban biodiversity. But how do we manage green infrastructure to maximise the benefits these features bring to humans and wider ecosystem functioning? Here we focus on gaining a better predictive understanding of diversity associated with green infrastructure can be optimised to enhance ecosystem services.

Biodiversity is widely recognised to be a key driver of multiple ecosystem functions (i.e. ecosystem multifunctionality), underpinning the provision of numerous ecosystem services for humanity, as well as undesirable disservices. Manipulation of biodiversity therefore has considerable potential to significantly improve how we construct and manage engineered and urban ecosystems. A major gap in knowledge hampering our ability to harness the benefits of biodiversity in urban areas is understanding how attributes particular to green infrastructure in urban environments affect biodiversity-ecosystem multifunctionality relationships. This knowledge is important for the design and management of urban green infrastructure to maximise ecosystem service provision in wider urban landscapes. Moreover, the mechanisms by which landscape form and biodiversity influence ecosystem services and mitigate against disservices operate at different scales, and we lack understanding of how these mechanisms operate and scale in urban landscapes. A further gap in knowledge is how the diversity of urban forms interact with the diversity of neighbouring peri-urban and rural forms to affect ecosystem services and disservices in urban landscapes.

Here we address these gaps in knowledge to understand how biodiversity can be used to enhance ecosystem multifunctionality in urban landscapes at contrasting scales. We focus on ecosystem services of carbon capture, cycling and storage, urban cooling, and water holding capacity, and disservices of greenhouse gas emissions, pathogen prevalence, and tick-borne pathogens; these services and disservices are intrinsically linked to green infrastructure and there is an established mechanistic basis for a link to biodiversity. We will integrate knowledge of biodiversity-ecosystem multifunctionality relationships into a modelling framework that will be used to create a web-based planning tool to determine how planning scenarios affect urban ecosystem multifunctionality. Our findings will contribute to the development of enabling mechanisms, with a focus on urban land use and green infrastructure planning, to enhance the contribution made by local scale green infrastructure interventions to wider landscape scale processes and the resilience of urban ecosystems.
 
Description Some Data analyses are still on-going; however, an early major finding was that we discovered a type of Borrelia pathogen new to the UK - Borrelia Bavariensis, which is thought to be a particularly pathogenic form of Borrelia (the Lyme disease pathogen), and occurs in continental Europe but never before recorded in the UK. This was published in 2023 in the high impact journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.
We then conducted a UK-wide analysis of urban and rural sites and discovered that tick densities and Lyme disease risk are particularly low (or even absent) from much of the central (and north-central) parts of England, in comparison to much higher risk in the North (especially Scotland) and SW of England. Furthermore, this analysis showed for the first time that the main determinant of ticks and Lyme disease risk within cities is the woodland cover and tick densities in the surrounding rural hinterland These finding were published in the very high impact journal Nature Cities in 2025.
Next we conducted state-of-the-art statistics (Structural Equation Models - SEMs) to uniquely tease apart the many pathways in the complex ecological networks linking deer with ticks and Lyme disease hazard, via effects on vegetation and rodents, and including seasonal and temperature effects. This showed that the tick and Lyme disease ecology system in Scotland is basically driven by direct effects of deer, rather than indirect effects via vegetation and rodents. This was published in Ticks & Tick-Borne Diseases in 2026.
Another ground-breaking study used the above SEM statistical approach to test, for the first time, (i) the differences between urban and rural ecosystems in the pathways determining ticks and Lyme disease risk and (ii) the effect of historical contexts as well as spatial contexts inside and surrounding surveyed sites. The results were fascinating, showing that ticks and Lyme disease risk in urban ecosystem are mostly driven by urban pressures (both historical and current spatial urbanisation and built-up cover), whereas in rural ecosystems the key driver was the age of woodlands. This was published in the high impact journal Landscape and Urban Planning in 2026.
Exploitation Route The knowledge of the presence of this pathogen in the two specific locations in the UK can be used by health professionals in these areas to help diagnose patients with relevant symptoms, to aid more appropriate and rapid treatment.
Scientifically, we have advanced some fundamental ecological paradigms, especially regarding (i) two separate ecosystems (urban and rural) interact to form a meta-ecosystem, with rural characteristics being the key determinant of ticks and Lyme disease risk in urban ecosystems; and (ii) striking differences in ecological networks in urban versus rural ecosystems. This is important to environmental/ecological science and to secondary and tertiary education.
These findings are also highly relevant to practical management of Lyme disease risk in cities, showing that control outside the city may be at least as effective as control within the city.

Description In addition to several high quality scientific publications, and what is also listed under "Influence on Policy, Practice, Patients and the Public' section such as feeding results from this project into the Scottish Health Protection Network's tick-borne disease advisory group, our findings are being sent to each town and city council where we have conducted ecological and social science surveys. Impacts are still emerging and a final analysis on urban greenspace management (e.g. mowing regimes and tree planting) impacts on ticks is currently underway. Findings will be particularly impactful for practical park management. We have been key participants at two Lyme disease awareness events at the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood, including direct discussions with MSPs; and the plenary and primary advisor at a stakeholder workshop to translate science into practice for tick-borne disease control. We have conducted detailed conversations with Glasgow City council regarding their local park management and planning, with a focus on ecosystem services and disservices (such as ticks and tick-borne disease risk).

Impact Before starting the training, the students had no experience at all of ecological field techniques or running science projects. After the training, they had expertise in hypothesis testing, fieldwork planning, survey design, a wide range of field techniques, data collection, data anlysis and report writing. This helped educate and fill a gap in expertise of a new workforce in an area that is currently lacking in expert personnel.

Impact Knowledge and awareness of tick-borne diseases was greatly increased for participants of the workshop. Some participants changed their attitudes towards certain control strategies as a result of what they learnt, such as implementing deer control or fencing, rather than spraying the vegetation.

PI Contribution A large proportion of our ecological surveys have taken place in and around Glasgow so that our findings have direct relevance to greenspace management and planning for Glasgow City Council, especially with respect to the areas of Glasgow where there are ticks and tick-borne disease risk and which park characteristics are associated with higher risk, as well as which management/planning strategies might mitigate risk. We have conducted meetings with Glasgow City Council employees to impart our findings as well as sent written reports.
Collaborator Contribution Glasgow City Council have provided us with permission to access and conduct our surveys in their urban greenspaces. In addition, they have been key participants in our stakeholder interviews, providing us with crucial information on their greenspace management and planning, and their priorities regarding ecosystem services and disservices.
Impact This collaboration is multi-disciplinary, between administrators, urban greenspace managers and planners at Glasgow City Council and ecologists, epidemiologists, public health practitioners, statisticians, geographers and social scientists employed under this NERC-funded MEaSURE project.

PI Contribution Our contribution is scientific inception of the idea, instigation of the collaboration, and contribution of our environmental tick and pathogen data. We instigated this new collaboration in order to combine our new data on urban ticks and Lyme disease hazard (collected during MEaSURE) with PHS/NHS Lyme disease case data. This will enable new analysis linking deprivation index and other environmental variables with ticks/environmental hazard and Lyme cases.
