Observations and synthesis to establish variability and trends of oceanic pH

Abstract

We propose a programme of observations, combined with analysis of past and ongoing time series, to discover the magnitude of surface pH variations at seasonal-up-to-decadal time scales. We will address the Atlantic, UK shelf and slope waters, and selected locations in the Southern Ocean and Nordic Seas, using data from time series stations and volunteer observing ships (VOS), measuring three parameters of the marine carbonate system. The programme will be integrated with the efforts of colleagues in other European countries, and with the Surface ocean carbon atlas project (SOCAT) which aims to produce the most comprehensive and up to date data base to access all the quality data relevant to ocean carbon uptake and pH. Estimation of change will be set against the background of intra- and inter-annual variation.

PI Contribution Data collected by Cefas under the NERC/Defra UKOA and the Defra PLACID programmes has been supplied to the project partners for synthesis with the UK dataset.
Collaborator Contribution The UKOA Data Synthesis project was developed in response to policy requirements identified by the Ocean Processes Evidence Group (OPEG), part of the Defra-led UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS). Information on variability and trends in marine CO2 and ocean acidification will be needed by Defra for several upcoming reviews on the status of UK seas, including: i) the Initial Assessment of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in 2016/2017; ii) the proposed 'Charting Progress 3', and its associated Feeder Reports; iii) UK inputs to future OSPAR Quality Status Reports for the North Atlantic; and iv) other national reviews of marine climate change; e.g. planned reports of the Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP) and the Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA). The project will collate and interpret information on air/sea CO2 data and other carbonate chemistry parameters (TA, DIC, pH and O; measured and derived), in UK marine waters, from sea surface to seafloor, in the wider context of comparable observations in NW European shelf seas, the North Atlantic and elsewhere. Effort will focus on the period 2010-2015; i.e. data primarily (but not exclusively) arising from UKOA support, and not available for the previous national marine assessment, 'Charting Progress 2' (Defra/UKMMAS, 2010).
