ISTAR-D - The contribution to sea-level rise of the Amundsen Sea sector of Antarctica

Abstract
This proposal will resolve the differences between satellite altimeter, SAR and gravity estimates of the mass imbalance of the Amundsen sector ice streams, through exploiting surface observations of accumulation, density and solid Earth motion made on the ISAR-D traverses in 2012/3 and 2013/4 of the Pine Island basin, and the wider BAS logistics from 2013 to 2016. In particular, it will:The objectives of this proposal are:
1. Determine, at deep cores at some 10 sites along an 850 km traverse throughout the Pine Island Basin, the inter-annual, decadal, and ~ 50 year average accumulation.
2. Determine, using shallow access holes at some 50 sites along the traverse, the annual fluctuations of accumulation and near surface density over the past ~ 15 years.
3. Interpolate along the traverse the spatial variation in accumulation using surface-dragged accumulation radar measurements, and the annual fluctuations of accumulation and near surface density, using airborne radar measurements.
4. Determine the motion of the solid Earth, and millennial-scale ice sheet elevation history, at 3 nunatak sites in the interior of the Pine Island Basin.
5. Evaluate the accuracy of accumulation and densification forecast models using the inter-decadal, fluctuation measurements, and more sophisticated densification models, and use the combination to best estimate the fluctuations of accumulation and density over the past ~ 20 years in the Amundsen Sea sector and beyond.
6. Use a West Antarctic ice history model, based on exposure dates, with other observations, to best estimate the solid Earth motion of the Amundsen sea-sector, and use the measurements of crustal motion to test this.
7. Determine the contributions of accumulation and density fluctuations, and solid Earth motion, to altimetric and gravity satellite estimates of the mass balance of the Amundsen sector, and reassess the SAR-based estimates of mass balance in the light of the new accumulation and measurements.
8. Best estimate the mass balance, and its change in time, of the Amundsen sector basins.
These objectives answer directly to the objectives of the ISTAR-D Announcement of Opportunity, in that they will result in the determination of the spatial and temporal variability of the regions mass imbalance, and, inter alia, quantify the uncertainties associated with the satellite estimates. More widely, they answer to an identified priority of the NERC Polar Strategy, "Ice sheets and Sea Level Rise", and to challenges of the NERC Climate and Earth System Science themes.

Planned Impact
This proposal (ISTAR-D) is aimed at determining the recent past, and present contribution to sea level of the Amundsen sector drainage basins. It will run along side the second activity of this NERC opportunity, ISTAR-C, that will focus on the dynamical behaviour of the sector's ice streams. Together, the two activities will provide the best knowledge, and prediction of this sector's contribution to sea level. We intend to pursue a common impact plan with ISTAR-C, as our contribution to the wider impact plan of the ISTAR program as a whole. The following groups are identified as key stakeholders in iSTAR-C/D science, and will be specifically targeted by our Knowledge Exchange activities:
1. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC is by far the most authoritative group synthesising scientific knowledge and predictions of sea-level rise. It is therefore essential that l group synthesising and delivering sea-level rise projections to policy-makers, it is essential that iSTAR-C/D science is delivered to IPCC. Science to be included in the IPCC 5th Assessment Report has to be submitted for peer review by July, 2012, iSTAR-C/D science will only be available to subsequent reports. Since IPCC reports relies almost exclusively on peer-reivewed literature, delivery to IPCC must be achieved through such publications. PI ISTAR-C is a Coordinating Lead Author for IPCC 4th and 5th Assessment Report, and can direct ISTAR-C and -D investigators to ensure ISTAR C and D fully contribute to the IPCC.
2. UK Environment Agency. Because of limitations of the IPCC sea-level rise projections, the UK Environment Agency have found the need to develop its own UK specific sea-level rise scenarios. These were developed in conjunction with the Hadley Centre and BAS. A regular dialogue with the key Programme Managers at the Environment Agency (e.g. TE2100) will ensure that the Environment Agency is fully able to use science outcomes.
3. Living With Environmental Change (LWEC). LWEC is a UK government initiative to optimize the coherence and effectiveness of UK environmental research funding and ensure government, business and society have the foresight, knowledge and tools to mitigate, adapt to and capitalise on environmental change. The ISTAR-C PI currently leads an Accredited Activity ("Ice sheets and sea-level rise") within the Living With Environment Change programme (LWEC). Early discussions, indicate that the activities described in iSTAR-C/D are welcome as a substantial addition to this activity. LWEC is proving to be an effective method of delivery to UK government departments and iSTAR-C/D will be well-positioned to contribute, especially to the activities such as LWEC's development of the UK First Flood Research Strategy .
4. Space and Meteorological Operational Agencies & Supply Industry. The CryoSat-2 radar design, that originated with the ISTAR-D PI, has been adopted as standard for future European operational meteorological and oceanographic satellites, and in particular the GMES Sentinel 3 and NOAA/Eumetsat/CNES Jason-CS missions. ISTAR-D will provide the proving ground for the scientific data processing of these data. The ISTAR-D PI is actively involved in the provision, with industry, of ground processing software for these missions.

| Description | 2022 update: We installed four corner reflectors on Fuchs Ice Piedmont to provide a common target for airborne radar and laser instruments, which will help with validating and interpreting height measurements. We measured the location and height of each reflector during installation and revisits for drilling firn cores. We assembled the reflectors at Rothera research station, transported them via twin otter, and secured them using deadman anchors. Staff members kindly retrieved the reflectors after we left so they could be in place for the CryoSat-2 overpass. We also extracted eight firn cores using a Kovacs drill, labelled and packed them, and analysed them back at Rothera, measuring weight, contrast, and thickness of each snow/firn/ice layer found. 2021 update:The team found that dual-frequency radar altimetry provides new information on firn properties, of use for characterising the depth of the near surface snow layer (Rodriguez et al. 2021). This work is of importance for partitioning measurements of ice sheet height change into signals due to weather and long-term climate change. The team have also found that satellite measurements of ice sheet mass change can be used to reduce the uncertainty of ice sheet models that are in turn used to make global sea level predictions (Payne et al., 2021; Edwards et al., 2021). This is important for planning mitigation and adaptation to future climate change in coastal regions. 2020 update: The team found that Antarctica's ice sheet has thinned by up to 122 metres in places, with the most rapid changes occurring in West Antarctica where ocean melting has triggered glacier imbalance. This means that the affected glaciers are unstable as they are losing more mass through melting and iceberg calving than they are gaining through snowfall. They also found that the pattern of glacier thinning has not been static. Since 1992, the thinning has spread across 24% of West Antarctica and over the majority of its largest ice streams - the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers - which are now losing ice five times faster than they were at the start of the survey. They used over 800 million measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet height recorded by the ERS-1, ERS-2, Envisat, and CryoSat-2 satellite altimeter missions between 1992 and 2017 and simulations of snowfall over the same period produced by the RACMO regional climate model. Together, these measurements allow changes in the ice sheet height to be separated into those due to weather patterns, such as less snowfall, and those due to longer term changes in climate, such as increasing ocean temperatures that eat away ice. They found that fluctuations in snowfall tend to drive small changes in height over large areas for a few years at a time, but the most pronounced changes in ice thickness are signals of glacier imbalance that have persisted for decades. Key findings: Using a long-term record of satellite observations we have quantified regional differences in ice-dynamical imbalance within the Amundsen Sea Embayment. Further work on snow fall variations on Pine Island Glacier from ground-based data, which might mask the actual signal of ice mass loss, is still in progress. Preliminary results yield a much improved map of yearly snow fall compared to earlier estimates. The programme formally ended in 2017 but overall findings include that future research in this field should include atmospheric processes, not just ice and ocean processes, while the value of long time series observations has proved critical and continuation of these time series efforts should be a high priority in the future. More observations are also needed of Pine Island Glacier before models can reliably predict the glacier's future behaviour. These include the development of satellite techniques to deliver a more robust assessment of Antarctic ice loss, and improvements to the ice sheet models used to predict sea level rise. In addition, BAS's new "tractor traverse" capability, in which tracked snow vehicles transport large equipment and portable living quarters across the ice, has been shown to provide a wide range and high quality of ice sheet data. Now proven, this capability can support further ice sheet research across a range of geoscience disciplines, including glaciology, geophysics, geology, paleoclimate, and atmospheric observations. |

| Description | 2022 update: The CryoVEx 2022 land ice team surveyed Fuchs Ice Piedmont on Adelaide Island (Figure 1). The land ice team deployed corner reflectors for the airborne team to survey and collected firn density and stratigraphy measurements as well as snow density measurements to help characterise fluctuations in radar penetration over Fuchs Ice Piedmont, where space coincident ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 surface height measurements were acquired during the same period. These measurements will help the interpretation of differences between radar and laser airborne and satellite altimetry measurements. Synthesis of findings is still in progress however they are already providing information on how combining satellite and ground-based data can help us unravel uncertainties in our projections for the future and provide us with a more comprehensive picture of mass ice loss. These new insights into the past and present behaviour of the glacier and conditions at the base of the ice, in combination with high-resolution topography, have enabled us to build better models of the ice flow. These in turn will lead to better predictions of the ice loss from West Antarctica. The field techniques are meanwhile being applied to new campaigns such as the NERC-NSF Thwaites programme. Press Release 16th May 2019: In only 25 years, ocean melting has caused ice thinning to spread across West Antarctica so rapidly that a quarter of its glacier ice is now affected, according to a new study. Scientists at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), based at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, have combined 25 years of European Space Agency satellite altimeter measurements and a model of Antarctica's regional climate to track changes in snow and ice cover across the continent. A new study in AGU's journal Geophysical Research Letters finds Antarctica's ice sheet has thinned by up to 122 meters in places, with the most rapid changes occurring in West Antarctica where ocean melting has triggered glacier imbalance. This means the affected glaciers are unstable as they are losing more mass through melting and iceberg calving than they are gaining through snowfall. The research team found the pattern of glacier thinning has not been static over time. Since 1992, the thinning has spread across 24 percent of West Antarctica and over the majority of its largest ice streams - the Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers - which are now losing ice five times faster than they were at the start of the survey. "In parts of Antarctica, the ice sheet has thinned by extraordinary amounts, and so we set out to show how much was due to changes in climate and how much was due to weather," said Andy Shepherd, a polar scientist at the University of Leeds, director of CPOM and lead author of the new study. To do this, the team compared the measured surface height change to the simulated changes in snowfall, and where the discrepancy was greater they attributed its origin to glacier imbalance. They found that fluctuations in snowfall tend to drive small changes in height over large areas for a few years at a time, but the most pronounced changes in ice thickness are signals of glacier imbalance that have persisted for decades. "Knowing how much snow has fallen has really helped us to detect the underlying change in glacier ice within the satellite record," Shepherd said. "We can see clearly now that a wave of thinning has spread rapidly across some of Antarctica's most vulnerable glaciers, and their losses are driving up sea levels around the planet. Altogether, ice losses from East and West Antarctica have contributed 4.6 millimeters to global sea level rise since 1992, according to the study. "This is an important demonstration of how satellite missions can help us to understand how our planet is changing," said Marcus Engdahl, an Earth observation scientist at the European Space Agency and co-author of the new study. "The polar regions are hostile environments and are extremely difficult to access from the ground. Because of this, the view from space is an essential tool for tracking the effects of climate change." Our work developing improved methods for tracking ice sheet elevation changes using satellite radar altimetry has informed (and been included in) a review of progress in satellite altimetry (Abdalla et al., 2021). This review article is a landmark multi-author assessment designed to pave the way for the next generation of atlimeter missions and challenges. Our field experiments in support of calibration and validation of the CryoSat-2 mission, funded as an uplift to the original iSTAR-D award, have informed the development of dual-frequency altimetry for the study of the polar ice sheets (Rodriguez-Morales et al., 2021). This work paves the way for the next generation CRISTAL satellite altiemter mission, in development by the European Space Agency and the European Commission. Our measurements of ice sheet mass change have been used to constrain ice sheet model projections of the sea level contribution due to Antaarctica over the 21st century (Payne et al., 2021; Edwards et al., 2021). This work is part of the Ice Sheet Model Inter-comparison Exercise for the IPCC, and featured prominently in the sixth assessment report. |
