UK International Ocean Discovery Program Knowledge Exchange Fellowship

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leicester
Department Name: Sch of Geog, Geol & the Environment

Abstract

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and its precursors form a global collaborative research and exploration effort with a 50-year history that has facilitated ocean drilling research and in so doing, helped explore Earth's history and dynamics. IODP has collected a broad range of data types from a huge variety of geological environments across the World's oceans, often using tools and technologies originally developed by industry. The UK has a long relationship with IODP, with UK scientists demonstrating significant ongoing leadership and influence in this international programme. The scale and breadth of the IODP databases are such that they represent a vast resource of unique information. This fellowship aims to promote and further develop relationships between the UKIODP community and a range of industries to help take full advantage of this valuable resource. This will help industry to access relevant data and help secure maximum economic and societal benefits from the IODP investment made by NERC.

The activities of this fellowship centre on establishing a framework for interaction that will ensure increased engagement of industry with the UKIODP community, and provide specific outcome measures. Year 1 of the fellowship will focus on evaluating the existing UKIODP-industry connectivity and industry use of IODP data, and establish an integrated network of industry end-users and UKIODP researchers. This will inform and underpin initiatives proposed in years 2 and 3 that will focus on actively increasing the uptake of IODP data by industry via key activities including: a targeted project proposal workshop; development of a UKIODP-CASE award scheme; and ongoing interaction between the communities remotely and via the ECORD Industry Liaison Panel (ILP). This fellowship's strategy is to look both ways, not only fostering UKIODP-industry engagement, but also actively promoting interaction of the UKIODP research community with UK policy makers. The KE Fellow will review the success of the initial activities and respond positively, developing new initiatives as necessary, to achieve continued UKIODP-industry engagement for the future.

Description The work done during this fellowship has identified that IODP research undertaken by UK researchers has huge impact potential, but that often that impact is not fully realised. Owing to the open-source nature of the IODP databases and samples, there are also instances of impact being realised that is over and above the original projects for which the data and samples were collected. This is particularly evident where industry have mined the data and gone on to develop products which have then been sold to their clients to assist in their exploration efforts. While the fellowship has gone a reasonable way to identifying and cataloguing instances of realised impact, and supporting cases where the research is in progress to ensure the path to impact realisation is as efficient as possible, it is clear that this may only be the tip of the iceberg given the 50 year history of the programme.
Exploitation Route Considered as part of the NERC national capability, UK IODP should continue to actively support and encourage impact realisation by its community of researchers.

Description Development of the CPD-accredited Petrophysics Summer School
Geographic Reach Multiple continents/international
Policy Influence Type Influenced training of practitioners or researchers
Impact The concept of the Petrophysics Summer School was developed in response to a skills gap in industry and the fact that training opportunities in petrophysics are relatively, and frequently very expensive. The annual week-long summer school provides an accessible introduction to the subject taught by a group of experts from across industry and academia. The course became CPD-accredited in 2017 and will take place for the third time in Leicester in July 2018. So far 60 participants have passed through the summer school, with a further 30 anticipated in summer 2018. Attendance at the school has enhanced the profiles of past-participants, with an increased rate of success in securing a place on IODP expeditions (to date 5, with more expected over the next couple of years). Many participants hope to ultimately secure jobs in the hydrocarbon industry. The summer school has now taken root and is continuing beyond the KEF award, with the 4th petrophysics summer school scheduled for July 2019.

Results and Impact The combination of the Home Office throwing down the challenge to remove some of the bigger uses of radiation sources, with growing security concerns about the availability and transport of sources used in downhole logging, led to the Nuclear Security Science Network (NuSec) and Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) coordinating a closed road-mapping workshop in January 2018: "Identifying alternative technologies for radiation sources in the oil industry". IODP alumnus Dr. Sheila Peacock (Blacknest (AWE), ODP Leg 196), concerned that any ban "might be detrimental to IODP science", ensured that UK IODP were invited to contribute to the workshop, joining ~30 participants from the oil industry, nuclear security community, Home Office and academia. The output, which is currently in development, will be an open briefing for the Home Office which will include a detailed roadmap for the UK to move towards reduction of the use of radioactive sources by the oil industry. UK IODP will continue to be involved in this initiative.
