Research on the UK Tax and Benefit System: Knowledge Transfer to Students non-academic organisations

Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
| Description | This was not a research grant; the purpose of this grant was to increase the rate of knowledge transfer to undergraduates, sixth formers and teachers in schools and universities: this would widen the audience for policy-relevant economic research; it might also increase the number of UK students in economics likely to progress to take PhDs and carry out future research. We organised a number of lectures on public economics aimed at undergraduates and sixth formers, drawing on our expertise in areas such as policy evaluation, labour supply, pensions and saving, inequality, public spending and productivity and innovation, as well as introducing and exploring concepts using economic theory. For many years, IFS researchers delivered an annual series of lectures at Oxford and Cambridge on these subjects. The aim was to broaden the potential audience to include students from a variety of institutions. Researchers updated the Fiscal Facts (http://www.ifs.org.uk/fiscalfacts.php) area of the IFS website to expand the number and range of tax tables available. This contains facts and figures about UK taxes, benefits and public spending. Tables give current and historical rates and thresholds for the main direct and indirect taxes, as well as benefit rates, claimant numbers and expenditure levels. We also give public spending details for the UK and some comparative figures for OECD countries. |
