VISTA exploitation: PI T&S support - April 2010

Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary, University of London
Department Name: Astronomy Unit

Abstract

The VISTA survey telescope was handed over to ESO for operation on 10 December 2009. Although VISTA is now ESO's the VISTA Prinicpal Investigator & Consortium Director's tasks have not ceased. During the 4 month period April to July 2010 he has several existing VISTA commitiments which require travel & associated subsistece. 1) Attendance at the ESO preliminary acceptance review on the SADT tool for generating observations with VISTA, for which he is responsible (June, Garching, Germany). 2) Working with the pipeline processing team at Cambridge, helping the team remain responsive to user needs (Apr-Jul, Cambridge, UK), interact productively with ESO and the survey PIs, working on calibration issues, and using his VISTA knowledge and contacts to assist the smooth progress of the dat processing. 3) Chairing, and talking at, the VISTA Surveys session at resent VISTA talks at the National Asronomy Meeting 2010 (April, Glagow, UK). 4) Presenting an invited talk on VISTA, and a contributed talk on VISTA's SADT at the SPIE2010 meeting (June/Jul, San Diego, USA).

Description This grant is one of a series covering the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) Principal Investigator's involvement in leading the design, construction, commissioning and delivery of VISTA to the European Southern Observatory(ESO) in Chile for operation by ESO. VISTA was successfully delivered in 2009 and has been working well ever since.
Exploitation Route Many (>100) research papers have appeared in astronomical journals based on VISTA's 6 'public surveys'.

The US Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) has adopted some ideas from VISTA's design.

Description EVALSO
Organisation University of Trieste
Country Italy
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Science case for installation of fibre to connect ESO Paranal to Antofagasta and then Santiago to enable fast(er) data transfer to Europe.
Collaborator Contribution Partner from organisations involved including Italian & Chilean equivalents of Janet (GARR & REUNA)
Impact The publications are listed elsewhere. The fast access enabled all ESO telescopes to send their data to Europe in almost real time, rather than on disks by courier. It also improved academic network along Chile's backbone, and enable REUNA to improve connectivity yo Lima in Peru.
