Title Collaboration with Petroc Sesti Studio for the public display of solar movies
Description Petroc Sesti is an artist specialising in the public display of science-oriented subjects. In the past few years he has used movies from our solar data (STEREO and SDO) to produce highly innovative displays of our data to the public, including large screens in public places and in special exhibitions. This is an ongoing project that has resulted in displays in a number of cities around the UK and Europe.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2018
Impact Extremely valuable public display of our solar movies in numerous innovative locations, enabling a wide public exposure to our work.

Title Participation in the creation of the Aelxander Whitley Dance Company production '8 Minutes'
Description STEREO and SDO solar observations, and their scientific interpretation, were used in a collaboration with the Alexander Whitley Dance Company for a production called 8 Minutes, that attempts to interpret the solar observations (played as a backdrop) using dance. The production was staged at Sadlers Wells and in 2018/19 played to a UK and European tour. The production has been highly acclaimed with large audiences.
Type Of Art Performance (Music, Dance, Drama, etc)
Year Produced 2017
Impact The public experienced solar observations from the viewpoint of dance, providing an excellent basis for getting the public to experience our own star and for the marriage of science and art.

Description Application of research to the development of the ESA and UK Government space weather activities at programme and policy level
Geographic Reach Europe
Policy Influence Type Participation in a national consultation
Impact Space weather is included on the UK National Risk register. Over the last few years, RAL Space staff (R Harrison and M. Hapgood) have served on the Space Environment Impacts Expert Group, advising Cabinet Office and BEIS about the UK impacts of space weather, and mitigation strategies. This is a long-term advisory activity that has been included in exercises to assess national readiness and planning. In parallel, we have been involved since 2009 in the emerging ESA space weather programme which had recently completed a series of studies involving RAL, moving now into instrument development studies. This is part of an international programme to provide two key spacecraft at L1 and L5 to serve as the key international space weather monitors.

Description BEIS Severe Space Weather Steering Group
Geographic Reach Multiple continents/international
Policy Influence Type Participation in a advisory committee

Description Continued consultation with Government, UKSA and ESA over space weather applications, exploiting the knowledge gained from the research programme - e.g. Space Environment Impact Expert Group that advises BEIS.
Geographic Reach Europe
Policy Influence Type Participation in a advisory committee
Impact The space environment and heliospheric research activities include studies of impacts relevant to solar ejecta arriving at Earth and their impacts on the near Earth environment and on human assets. Research into solar coronal mass ejections in particular, as well as into the ionospheric and magnetospheric environment are proving to be particularly fruitful in the application for space weather. The knowledge gained from such work is being actively fed into studies of the application of knowledge into space weather consultation activities (including with the Government through the Space Environment Impacts Expert Group) and in space weather mitigation activities through mission development (including consultation with UKSA and engagent with the ESA Space Situational Awareness programme). A particular milestone in securing UK leadership in instrumentation for ESA's Lagrange space weather mission.

Results and Impact BBC World Service/BBC Sounds podcast. I had several discussions with the production team, by email, phone and face-to-face, across the summer of 2018 and recorded an audio interview in September. Several parts of my interview were incorporated into podcast, along with inputs from other experts at RAL, Met Office, NASA, India Space Research Organisation and others. The podcast was released on 26 December 2018.

It's hard to assess the impact in the absence of any feedback from the production team, but my tweet of links to the podcast received positive feedback in the form of both replies and likes. This mainly shows impact in the professional community. But, given that this was a World Service podcast, I anticipate it has reached a large audience. A Google search shows that the podcast has been widely disseminated by providers around the world, not just the BBC.
