The GCT camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment
Description | This funding gave us the capability to prototype complex electronic circuits fpr cameras for use in the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Without this in-house capability the costs and timescale of procurement from industry would have limited the scope of the electronics development. This equipment has substantially reduced production costs allowing design iteration to optimise performance. In 2016-2017 this equipment was used extensively indevelopment of the TARGET electronics module, a multi-channel high speed data acquisition system, a core component in the camera developed for the UK involvement in Cerenkov Telscope Array. This work could not have been undertaken without the equipment funded in this project. It has also proved extremely valuable for many other research council funded projects at the University of Leicester. |
Exploitation Route | The facility is available for other University of Leicester projects and for CTA collaborators. |
Sectors | Aerospace Defence and Marine Environment Healthcare Manufacturing including Industrial Biotechology |
Description | This electronics production facility has been intensively used for the research and development of the front-end electronics for the CHEC camera for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. These FEE electronics include a) a miniaturised low power 64 channel high speed preamplifier, and b) a matching 64 channel 1GSa/s waveform digitiser and trigger module. The CHEC FEE module, developed at Leicester University, was designed, manufactured and delivered in Q3 2017 for the CHEC-S prototype camera which is now undergoing laboratory testing prior to on-telescope tests in Q2/Q3 2018. The facility will also be used for projects with non-academic impact at the University of Leicester, making outputs from these projects more cost-effective and productive. Leicester has joined the US-led SCT collaboration developing a Medium-Sized Telescope (MST) for CTA, and the facility has helped to develop a modified FEE module for SCT. The facility is also being incorporated in the new advanced manufacturing infrastructure suite being assembled at Leicester. This will form part of the Space Park Leicester project to integrate space research at Leicester with aerospace companies, bringing low cost access to space capabilities to the East Midlands. |
