Laser-driven mulit-modal beams for nuclear waste inspection

Lead Research Organisation: STFC - Laboratories

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description National Nuclear Laboratory optioneering workshop on inspection of fuel rods
Geographic Reach National
Policy Influence Type Participation in a advisory committee

Description Participation in Consultancy Meeting for IAEA on laser-driven x-rays and neutrons for applications
Geographic Reach Multiple continents/international

Description Consultation panel for the International Atomic Energy Authority on laser-driven neutron and x-ray sources
Organisation International Atomic Energy Agency
Country Austria
Sector Charity/Non Profit
PI Contribution I provided insight into the impact of laser-driven neutron and x-ray beams for nuclear waste management and a short review of recent research and development activity in the UK
Collaborator Contribution IAEA brought together a group of 5 experts (myself included) to consult on the state-of-the-art and the impact of laser-driven neutron and x-ray beams for science and industry. The other experts on the panel were from Germany (Uni. Darmstadt), US (Los Alamos National Laboratory), Japan (Uni. Osaka), and Israel (Uni. Tel-Aviv)
Impact A consultation meeting report will be published (authored by myself and the expert team) by IAEA on the recommendations for a technical meeting focussed on this subject area and the need for a technical document to be published in 2020.
Start Year 2019

Results and Impact Tour across Australia as the 2018 Women in Physics Lecturer, hosted by the Australian Institute of Physics:
In just 3 ½ weeks I travelled across 6 states and spoke to young, old, scientists, non-scientists - I gave talks at schools, universities, and even at an art gallery! And I gave a live interview for ABC's The World about the physics and applications with high power lasers and being a woman in physics.
35 talks in total of which 14 were school talks (mostly years 10 - 12, ages 15 - 17), 8 public talks, 11 academic seminar lectures, and 2 Girls In Physics Breakfast talks.

Results and Impact 5 events in total. Speaking to an audience of sixth form physics students, audience size ~ 700 students per event.

3 events in London
1 event in Coventry
1 event in Manchester

Feedback from teachers is the students were inspired by hearing about the applied side of extreme physics applications and are interested to pursue work experience at national laboratories
