Deputy Spokesperson of ATLAS during LHC Start-up and Early Physics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The ATLAS experiment is the world's largest particle physics experiment, and is sited on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland. ATLAS is a collaboration of a large number of particle physicists, around 2500, from all around the world. The coming two years of ATLAS operation will be of great importance to the physics of the smallest particles that we know in nature: the LHC will probe to higher energies and smaller distances than ever before, and the start of its operation will now be in the summer of 2009, following the first beams in 2008. During the period 2009-2011, substantial numbers of collisions will be observed, sufficient to be sensitive to a variety of possible new physics processes. The observation of such processes would be one of the most exciting developments in particle physics for many years. ATLAS is led by a spokesperson and two deputies: this funding is to support one of these deputy spokespersons, a UK physicist, Professor David Charlton from the University of Birmingham, during 2009-2011.
