The nature of highly polarised radio sources

Lead Research Organisation: Nottingham Trent University
Department Name: School of Science & Technology

Abstract

A sample of extended radio sources have been found to have very high average linear polarisation. Such high total linear polarisation is almost unheard of in extragalactic sources. We may have found a new class of galaxies that favour the production of radio sources with extremely ordered, strong magnetic field in a low density environment. We propose optical spectroscopy and imaging to study the nature of this new class of objects.

Description Spectroscopic redshift was determined for 9 ultra high polarisation radio sources which showed that these new results are consistent in properties with the sources we studied so far with SDSS redshift. This improved the statistics of the study of the nature of ultra high polarisation radio sources.
Exploitation Route The data is available publically and can be used for a variety of other astronomy projects.

PI Contribution 2 hour observing time was obtained on the western EVN on 30th September 2010 to observe one of high polarisation sources observed at CAHA.
Collaborator Contribution initiated the collaboration and analysed the data, but negative result was found
Impact This is not multidisciplinary. We found at least J134054+425601 was not a point source at VLBI scales and therefore the polarised emission is diffuse rather than compact.
