Durham DiRAC-2 petascale facility

Lead Research Organisation: Durham University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The grant is to establish the Durham Petascale facility. The petascale facility is designed to enable data intensive science "Grand Challenge" calculations tackling a range of scientific problems in fields including cosmology, star formation and magnetohydrodynamics and other areas of the science programme of the DiRAC facility. Resources would be offered to "Grand Challenge" projects in cognate scientific disciplines that use related computational techniques and have common hardware and software requirements. Details are provided in the Business Case attached to this form which was submitted to STFC in November 2011 and discussed at the meeting of the DiRAC Project Management Board held at Leicester University on 21/Nov/2011.

Planned Impact

DiRAC would seek to engage with industry at various levels, from the provision of computing cycles for industrial applications to the exchange of technical knowledge and shared training programmes. The facility will serve to train young scientists in the most advanced techniques for supercomputing. These have extensive application beyond academia, for example in industry. Finally, output from Dirac-based projects will be used for science outreach activities. Details are provided in the Business Case attached to this form which was submitted to STFC in November 2011 and discussed at the meeting of the DiRAC Project Management Board held at Leicester University on 21/Nov/2011.

Description We have used structures around the Milky Way to investigate the nature of dark matter and found evidence that the dark matter particle is much lighter than previously thought: according to our results it is about a million times lighter than anticipated.
Exploitation Route Promoted observational studies to identify additional Milky Way satellites and measure their properties.

Description The ICC research and that of the Virgo Consortium has been described as the "Formula One of Computing" (Stephen Emmott, Head of Microsoft's Computational Science Research). As such, the demands of our calculations put extreme pressure on computing hardware and software and offers suppliers with a testbed of their products. This is clear from the relationship with have developed with Sun and, more recently IBM, over the past decade.

Description Euclid
Organisation European Space Agency
Country France
Sector Public
PI Contribution Euclid is an ESA mission to map the geometry of the dark Universe. The mission will investigate the distance-redshift relationship and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and redshifts of galaxies and clusters of galaxies out to redshifts ~2, or equivalently to a look-back time of 10 billion years. In this way, Euclid will cover the entire period over which dark energy played a significant role in accelerating the expansion.

PI Contribution I am part of a large HST Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). The collaboration started in 2013, and it is still active. The first paper from the collaboration was recently accepted (Calzetti et al., 2014 AJ in press). As part of the collaboration, I am contributing to the data analysis and modeling.
Collaborator Contribution The collaboration has also a rich outreach programme: one highlight is the realization of 3D models with different textures to help visually impaired students to learn about galaxies.

Collaborator Contribution Each team member, from whatever discipline, contributes to editions, translations, analyses and presentations. In so doing, we are pioneering new ways of working across and between our disciplines. Trusting one another, and learning to learn from the past have presented creative demands. We have challenged academic and public preconceptions regarding the value of past science as 'irrelevant'. Funding for the project has been provided by Durham University's Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK, and the Mahfouz Foundation for Interdisciplinary Research, Pembroke College, Oxford
Impact Bringing together a unique configuration of natural scientists, social scientists and arts and humanities scholars, the project integrates the conceptual tools of modern science with the textual methods of the humanities to explore the richness of Grosseteste's thought. Our translations, many for the first time, and which incorporate the groundbreaking concept of translation into mathematics, enable wider access to this wonderful mind, compelling us to make new assessments of his perceptive and inventive imagination.
