Abstract

We address two key areas of astrophysics: how do stars form from clouds of dust and gas and what chemical processes are at work in our solar system that may play a role in the emergence of life.

Magnetic fields pervade interstellar space and play a crucial role in controlling how material can accumulate into ever denser cores as gravity takes hold during the collapse to a star-planet system. Even though stellar birth sites are cold and dense there are still some charged particles such as electrons, molecular ions and, importantly, charged grains of dust. We will investigate with computer simulations how the presence of charged dust grains affects the formation of stars similar to our Sun.

The formation of stars much more massive than our Sun has proved to be much more problematic as they are rare and distant and produce prodigious amounts of radiation that blow material away rather than let it fall in. As the infalling material gets close in to the star we expect it to complete its journey in a thin disc orbiting the star. We will search for these discs using the techniques of infrared interferometry. With imaging spectrographs we will look for tiny spatial shifts from spectral lines from the disc relative to the starlight to gain spatial information at levels 10 to 100 times better than the Hubble Space Telescope.

At the same time that material is spiralling onto a star via a disc, some of it is being ejected at high speeds along the rotation axis by magnetic fields. We will use the highly sensitive new network of radio dishes in the UK, e-MERLIN, to map the emission from these jets and study how these plough into the surrounding infalling molecular material. The detailed mapping of the molecular emission will be carried out with the new ALMA telescope in Chile where 66 dishes work in unison at microwave frequencies. Combined radio and microwave studies will allow us to find out when the magnetic forces give way to the strong pressure of radiation.

As massive stars finally begin to clear away the material from which they were born, the combined effect of the winds driven by their strong radiation fields has a dramatic effect. As the winds slam into the molecular material, and each other, they emit strongly in the X-ray region as observed with NASA's Chandra satellite. The most massive stars have such short lives of a few million years, that they can blow up as supernovae whilst still surrounded by the remnants of the molecular clouds. Computer simulations will be used to tackle this problem to investigate how these processes can terminate the star formation episodes in giant molecular clouds.

In distant, primeval galaxies, massive star formation dominates much of what we see. Chemical models and observations will be used to help us understand how the first generations of stars evolve. Massive stars that are nearing the end of their lives also lose much of their mass due to the radiation pressure driving off their outer layers. These processes will be investigated observationally using the high resolution IR techniques described above. When two massive evolved stars are in a close binary system their winds also smash into each other giving rise to X-ray emission. Numerical simulations will be used to investigate these processes.

Titan, one of Saturn's moons, is of great interest as there are analogies to the early Earth. The Cassini Huygens mission found that there is more benzene than expected in the atmosphere and less ethane on the surface (lakes rather than deep oceans). We will carry out a range of laboratory studies to determine the atmospheric rates of formation and removal of these species and gauge the impact of our results through inclusion in chemical models.

Meteorites preserve a memory of the early solar system and their chemical make-up can help us understand the origins of life. Experiments on iron meteorites will investigate the role of electron transfer on pre-biotic molecules.

Planned Impact

The proposal concerns work that will have impact on various industries that directly benefit from the spin-offs of our research methodologies, expertise and in-house computer codes. For example, the research exploiting our state-of-the art multi-fluid models is extremely relevant in a surprisingly wide range of applications. These include the gas industry where our codes are used to simulate flows along pipelines and potential hazards associated with carbon sequestration, water management through simulations of river flow, and metallic paints. Other direct industrial beneficiaries are the mining and explosives companies that are being aided by the application of methods developed to model the explosion of stars as supernovae. Similarly, the combustion processes in supernovae have helped research into more efficient fuel combustion for the automotive industry. The ongoing development and improvement of computational methods and codes will ensure the continuation of existing, and the forging of new, fruitful industrial collaborations which will ultimately aid the UK's economic competitiveness.

The study of the extreme atmospheres on bodies such as Saturn's moon Titan will further help our understanding of the gases, aerosols and hazes in our own atmosphere. This will benefit the health of the population in general due to a better understanding of air pollution. Techniques devised to study planetary atmospheres are also being developed to better understand our own atmosphere and climate change in particular.

Our astronomical expertise has been applied to planning applications seeking to install infrared lighting near a dark sky park. This will ensure that both the population of that area are safe and that the public can still enjoy viewing the stars.

The subjects of stellar birth and planet formation, including their astrobiological relevance, appeal to the imagination. Leeds astrophysicists are strongly committed to communicating both their own and general astronomical results to a wide audience. They do this via public appearances and the organisation of events, and through the mass media by, for example, issuing press releases and making media appearances.

Our outreach is built around a set portfolio of events which continue to be developed and improved. We particularly focus certain events on school children and young people. An enhanced collaboration with the Leeds Amateur Astronomical Society is being established through the donation of telescopes and joint outreach events such as Stargazing Live.

A major new outreach venture is being planned at the site of the old British Telecommunication site at Goonhilly, Cornwall. The University of Leeds is leading a consortium of universities that is investing in, and work with, a private company that has taken ownership of the site. It is being redeveloped for commercial satellite telecommunications, deep space communications and radio astronomy. A key part of the plan is for a new visitor centre and space science park that aims to attract 100 000 visitors per year. This will showcase the best of British space science and astronomy to a new audience. Experience gained in reusing old infrastructure at Goonhilly for science will also be applied to Africa where many ex-telecommunications dishes are ear-marked for redevelopment. Leeds astronomers will play a key role in training new generations in developing countries.

Description A large Keplerian accretion disk has been found using ALMA around a massive forming star. This is the best evidence to date of massive stars forming in a similar way to low mass stars but with much larger disks. Our research has greatly increased the number of massive young stellar objects know to be powering jets. The fraction of these exhibiting non-thermal emission is found to be higher than previously thought, which points to an increased role for magnetic fields in the mass star formation phenomena.
It has also been shown that the innermost regions of a proto-planetary disk can continue to accrete material even if a gap with a proto-planet in it exists outside of that region by very high resolution IR interferometer observations.
The famous Rosette Nebula is a key object for understanding how massive stars affect nearby star formation, through a process known as "feedback", due to their intense UV radiation, powerful winds and supernova explosions. Our investigation of GAIA data of the central star cluster indicates that the nebula is 1.75 Myr old, yet previous models of the evacuated central cavity yield an upper age for it of 0.11 Myr. We have demonstrated that this age discrepancy disappears if the "feedback" occurs into a sheet-like molecular cloud, and are able to reproduce all major key properties including cavity size, stellar age, inclination to the line of sight, and Planck-based observations of the magnetic field.
Exploitation Route Academics in the field will need to update their theories in response to the observed findings.

Description The hydrodynamic codes developed as part of this grant continue to be used in the industrial sector. Falle is a director of the scientific consultancy, Mantis Numerics Ltd, which is involved in a wide range of industrial projects. The techniques that have been developed for astrophysical applications, such as AMR and complex equations of state, have been applied to industrial problems, for example carbon capture and storage (through CO2QUEST, an EU FP7-funded project). Expertise from this and other projects (COOLTRANS 2010-2014, CO2PIPEHAZ 2010-2014) now mean that Falle, Wareing and Van Loo have been involved in a short cryogenic machining project (NIN320 Advanced Cooling in Machining Processes, PI Van Loo, Spring 2017) and Innovate UK and EPSRC grant applications in collaboration with the Nuclear Advanced Machining Research Centre in Sheffield are currently being prepared.

Impact At this meeting I and others put forward the idea of using the forthcoming Newton Fund for radio astronomy as a vehicle for research collaboration with the UK and for economic development in the African countries participating in the African VLBI Network and Square Kilometre Array projects. This resulted in a Newton call specifically for this effort which is now operating and resulting in basic training for 10 students per year in Kenya and Zambia with further expansion planned. Also 3 PhD and 3 MSc places have been awarded at UK university partners including Leeds.

Impact Together with the DiRAC facility we organised a computational MHD workshop at the University of Leeds from 11 to 15 December 2017. The purpose of this workshop was to provide PhD students and postdoctoral researchers within (but not limited to) the UK MHD consortium an introduction to computational methods for solving the MHD equations. As the UK MHD consortium covers a wide range of topics across incompressible and compressible MHD, the workshop did not focus on one single computational method, but involved several numerical techniques. The programme also allowed for plenty of interaction with lecturers and other participants.

In 2022 a Space AI Institute is being developed at Goonhilly where academics from CUGA can utilize the GPU cluster in the new data centre facility at Goonhilly and work on applied problems with space sector clients. Funds from ST/W507994/1 have been used to augment the GPU cluster and upgrade the digital back end for the radio telescope to enable maser monitoring.

Each main partner has contributed £125k net either in cash or in kind. Oxford has contributed a C-band receiver and digital backed. Manchester are making available an L-band receiver. The 29 m class Ghy-3 dish has been refurbished and brought back in to use as a dual-purpose radio telescope and deep space communications dish. Leeds has contributed to the drive upgrades and peripheral components for the L-band receiver. There is an ambition to link them into the existing e-MERLIN network in the UK and EVN in Europe. UCLan joined the effort in 2018 and will provide and in-kind contribution of the mount for the L-band receiver on the Ghy-1 dish. In 2022 a Space AI Institute is being developed at Goonhilly where academics from CUGA can utilize the GPU cluster in the new data centre facility at Goonhilly and work on applied problems with space sector clients. Funds from ST/W507994/1 have been used to augment the GPU cluster and upgrade the digital back end for the radio telescope to enable maser monitoring.

Impact A JANET REACH grant has been awarded to GES Ltd, Adaptive Array Systems Ltd and CUGA to enable a datalink between Goonhilly and Jodrell Bank to allow the connection into e-MERLIN. Various joint outreach events have taken place.

PI Contribution I am constructing hydrodynamic models of young massive clusters to better understand the nature of the diffuse X-ray emission that resides inside some of them, and the impact of massive stars on their environment.
Collaborator Contribution MYStIX (Massive Young Star-Forming Complex Study in Infrared and X-ray) is a project to synthesize multi-wavelength (mostly archival) photometric data on 20 young clusters within d<4 kpc to obtain new censuses of cluster stars and images of nebular emission. SFiNCs (Star Formation in Nearby Clouds) in an extension of the project to 22 smaller star forming regions within d<1kpc. The science goals are to improve our understanding of clustered star formation, early cluster dynamics, OB star feedback processes, triggered star formation, star formation histories, survivability of protoplanetary disks, and related topics. The central datasets are from Chandra ACIS, UKIRT/UKIDSS WFCAM & 2MASS, and Spitzer IRAC surveys. By combining infrared- and X-ray selected cluster members, both disk-bearing (Class I and II) and disk-free (Class III) young stars are identified, as well as OB stars. Samples of 31,784 MYStIX Probable Complex Members (MPCMs) and 8,492 SFiNCs Probable Members (SPCM) are obtained. By removal of X-ray sources, diffuse X-ray emission suffusing HII regions is revealed. Impact The collaboration has to date produced 9 technical/catalogue papers, and 7 science papers.

Results and Impact Invited by Dr Charles Jenkins, CSIRO Australia, Dr Wareing gave an invited talk to this informal networking meeting for researchers and industry in these two key areas of carbon capture and storage. The first part of the talk was entitled: High Pressure CO2 Pipelines: CFD simulation of the consequences of puncture and rupture on land. The second part of the talk was entitled: High Pressure CO2 Pipelines: application to underwater pipelines. The talk and consequent panel discussion was well received, with several questions and prospective avenues of research collaboration and industrial application. Unfortunately, the UK government pulled the plug on CCS funding in the UK shortly afterwards. Dr Wareing also presented a poster entitled: Accidental releases from high pressure CO2 pipelines on land: numerical predictions versus experimental data. Dr Wareing was also credited in presentations from UCL and National Grid, regarding the 2010-2014 COOLTRANS project.

Results and Impact Hoare took part in a Science Day at Ashfield Primary School, Otley ahead of their ARISS link up with Tim Peake in the ISS. He demonstrated to the pupils the role of the antenna at Goonhilly Earth Station relays the video signals from the ISS to their school as well as informing the pupils of the possibilities of radio astronomy. Erin McNeill (Ogden Trust Fellow) took a team from Leeds to do rocket launches and make galaxy dream-catchers.

Results and Impact All co-I's on the grant are involved with various open days organized by the University of Leeds (3 times a year) and by the School of Physics and Astronomy and School of Chemistry respectively (in excess of 20 times a year). In both cases, work and teaching by personel is show cased to school pupils and general public.
