Description We have found that ultracold neutrons (neutrons moving a few meters per second) can be stored for 10 minutes or more at cryogenic temperatures in a specially prepared acrylic box.
Exploitation Route Findings from this research will help lead to an improved neutron EDM measurement by the SNS and PSI nEDM collaborations.
Sectors Other

Description The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Sussex runs an intense outreach programme, closely linked to our research. We work with over 12,000 people per year, including members of the general public, and school and college students, interacting through stands at various science fairs and in classroom-type settings.

PI Contribution I joined this collaboration when post at University of Sussex was taken up in Sept. 2013. STFC decided to stop funding the project in Dec. 2013, with some small continued funding for a limited withdrawal period. Before the cessation, I was working on planning cryogenic UCN storage measurements to be carried out at the ILL PF2 ultracold neutron source, and was preparing tests for a large diameter cyrogenic seal between G10 and metal.
Collaborator Contribution Partners were were working on various experimental activities for CryoEDM, and also working on an upgrade proposal for the project to be submitted in early 2014.
Impact This research contributed to the invited talks at IPA2014 and the IOP 2014 conferences.

Organisation Paul Scherrer Institute
Country Switzerland
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Joined collaboration in April 2014. We are starting to participate in data taking and analysis for the current running experiment. We are studying Hg depolarisation effects caused by high voltage effects, and are taking part in the planning of a major upgrade to the apparatus.
Collaborator Contribution The apparatus is located at PSI, and the running of the measurement is mainly organised by staff at PSI.

PI Contribution Contributed work on preparing an apparatus that will be used to measure ultracold neutron storage times in a prototype neutron EDM measurement cell at cryogenic temperatures. Measurements will be carried out at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Collaborator Contribution Travel money was contributed to spend one week at Los Alamos National Laboratory in August, 2014.
Impact This research contributed to the invited talks at IPA2014 and the IOP 2014 conferences.

Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach Regional
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact Gave a public lecture on electric dipole moment research in the evening as part of the Sussex University series to around 30 people from the general public. A lively discussion followed on the questions of the origins of the universe and different measurements trying to lead to greater understanding.
