Description An R&D programme ran to develop a light injection calibration system for a large scale water Cherenkov experiment. Two forms of light injection were investigated: a diffuse, uniform, light distribution useful to provide a relative calibration of the light collection sensors and; a collimated light beam that can enable a measurement of attenuation as light travels through the water volume.
Exploitation Route The conclusions of this study provided the baseline for follow up STFC-funded awards for a prototype design installed in the SuperK experiment and more optimal calibration designs for the Hyper-K experiment.
