Technology Transfer Fellow

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The University of Manchester is seeking to employ a dedicated Knowledge Exchange (KE) professional through the IPS Fellowship scheme, to support the generation of economic and societal impacts of STFC-funded research, and the commercialisation of research outputs. The Fellow will be embedded in the School of Physics & Astronomy, where the vast majority of STFC-funded research at Manchester is carried out (being Accelerator Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics). However, the Fellow will also be responsible for overseeing KE activities for STFC-funded research in other Schools including Earth, Atmospheric & Environmental Science and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

The integration of a KE professional within the School will place them in a prime position to support academics in gaining suitable funding for research with commercial potential, to help realise the impact of research projects. The Fellow will also engage with industry, promoting the School's research and seeking new collaborative partnerships. It is crucial that the Fellow will have a background in physics, with experience of both academic and industrial research environments.

Ultimately, the Fellow will be tasked with bringing in research funding from industrial partners, but also in generating added-value to the UK economy by providing these partners with a source of knowledge and expertise in the core STFC science areas. The generation of intellectual property rights and spin-out companies will also generate further income to the University over the long term, which will be reinvested in impactful research. The generation of new impact case studies for future Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessments will also aid in generating income to the University. In this way, the Fellowship will facilitate a transition to a sustainable system over the long term, allowing the University to retain the Fellow beyond the term of the Fellowship itself.

Description A significant culture change in knowledge exchange activities, particularly with industry, has led to the following measurable indicators:

- Industry and Knowledge Exchange income has risen by a factor 3.5 in this REF period compared to the previous one.
- Direct UK industrial funding has risen a factor 1.8
- Number of patent families has doubled.
Exploitation Route As a model to other physics departments on how to improve Knowledge Exchange activities. Three key activities were created.

1). Internal & External Marketing - developed a strategy for identifying and communicating more effectively with STFC-funded researchers, to promote greater awareness of the knowledge exchange schemes available. The Fellow implemented a strategy of 'on-ramping' which provides several low-cost, low-risk business engagement schemes for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), whilst allowing larger companies to jump straight to more significant forms of investment and collaboration. To maximise efficiency and ensure alignment to wider institutional goals, this was developed with engagement with colleagues in our central Business Engagement support team, the technology transfer office (University of Manchester Innovation Factory), and key academic stakeholders. A mix of general Industry Engagement Days and more focused meeting between external partners and academics were used to promote different funding schemes including STFC schemes and KTPs.

2). Establishing a sustainable KE mechanism for STFC funded research. Increases in KE and industrial income are evidence of the success in this area.

3). Cockcroft Institute - increasing and improving impact opportunities at the Cockcroft Institute, especially through support of the new Christie Proton Therapy Centre. Members of Manchester/Cockcroft have been involved in the design and review of this facility.
Sectors Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software),Education,Healthcare,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology

Description This is a grant to support and enhance knowledge exchange activities and did not involve any research directly. However, it did foster new collaborations and work that significantly improved the non-academic impact of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. For example, software to monitor mental health of undergraduates ( Third Floor Systems), food and climate change ( Prof. Bridle), analysis of football data with a major local team ( Profs. Wyatt and Galla).

Results and Impact The Manchester Physics & Astronomy Industry Day is an annual event to promote engagement between the department's researchers and collaborators (existing and potential) from industry and healthcare organisations. The 2016 event drew in around 40 external visitors from around the country. In 2017 this grew to 60 externals, plus 60 internal attendees. The event consists of a series of talks on how we engage and collaborate with industry, an exhibition featuring case studies of successful ventures and collaborations, and shorter talks on specific research/application areas. Since the last event (December 2017) a number of companies have followed with enquires about KTPs, studentships, graduate recruitment and sponsorship of activities within the School.
