Description The work funded by this award has led to advances in our understanding of the physics of radio-loud active galaxies - a class of galaxy in which jets are produced from a central black hole, which have a dramatic impact on their surroundings. With this work we have learnt that two important sub-classes of jet have different composition - they appear to be made of different types of particle, which affects how much energy they transfer to their environments. New software was written to analyse the results of human volunteer classifiers (citizen science) examining images from the most sensitive northern hemisphere radio sky survey, which has enabled a range of investigations of galaxy jets by other research groups.
Exploitation Route Methods developed with this funding are in use by multiple groups to continue the northern sky radio survey, mapping the locations of black holes across the sky. The physics understanding of galaxy jets and the galaxies and wider environments in which they live is influencing further studies with many international telescopes and being used to make predictions for the future Square Kilometre Array and the European Space Agency's Athena mission.
