Exploring new states of matter (New Applicant scheme)

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The coming decade could deliver a revolution in our understanding of the fundamental nature of strongly interacting matter. Our current understanding of the strong interaction permits a large variety of bound states of quarks. Quark-anti-quark systems (mesons) and baryons (3 quarks) are the simplest options. Tetraquarks, pentaquarks, hexaquarks, hadronic molecules - are the new objects only recently starting to reveal themselves. In recent years, I led research establishing a new type of matter - the d*(2380) hexaquark. I intend to maintain this internationally leading role in the rapidly evolving, and increasingly competitive, field of hexaquark matter, which I view as one of the major recent discoveries in nuclear physics. The d* can be produced copiously in electromagnetic beam experiments, offering unique possibilities for direct measurement of the shape of a multi-quark state. Further, we have shown the d* has the potential to play a pivotal role in determining neutron star mass limits, EoS properties at high density and when in a condensate is a potential new dark-matter candidate. Recently it was indicated a d* pole in the pn interaction could play a role in nuclear structure viz. nuclear short range correlations. In this period I have a leading role in the preparations and first analysis of electron- deuteron scattering from CLAS12@JLAB, offering the first possibilities to establish the d* decuplet (discover 9 more hexaquarks) and obtain first constraints on the size of the d*. I will be leading analyses of MAMI data (recent 2 month beamtime) which has the potential to give first information on the nature of the interaction of d*. The period is also crucial for the newly-proposed neutral kaon beam facility (KLF), for which I am a co-spokesperson, using the next-generation compact photon sources at JLab (US). This is currently an international collaboration of 100+ scientists from 60+ institutions, commencing operations in 2025 and will be a major new facility for the international community leading up to the realisation of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) in 2030.

Results and Impact This curriculum-linked workshop is centred around a 7m-long nuclear chart built from over 25,000 Lego bricks. Students will gain an introduction to nuclear physics before using the chart to follow nuclear decay chains, explore the concept and applications of binding energy, and research the uses of different isotopes. The workshop will then look at the application of nuclear physics to stars. Students will discover the nuclear reactions happening during stellar explosions in an activity demonstrating half-lives and the random nature of radioactive decay.

The Masterclass is open to all students studying A level Physics (or equivalent). Students must attend with a teacher
