UK Knowledge Exchange Hub for mathematical Sciences

Abstract
It is widely recognised that the mathematical sciences (MS) make a crucial contribution to the UK economy and global society. The KE Hub has been established to capitalise on this and drive a step change in the scale, connectivity, and coordination of MS KE infrastructure in the UK. We are motivated by the principles that MS academics are innovative problem solvers, all areas of MS can realise impact, and that working with Business, Industry, and Government (BIG) leads to great new MS.
The KE Hub is a coordinated academic response to (i) the 2018 Bond Review (The Era of Mathematics), which recommended that “A national centre in impactful mathematics for the UK should be created to work with industry and government to drive mathematical research through to commercialisation [… and] act as a national KE hub”, and (ii) the subsequent support for the 2021 community consultation document entitled A Knowledge Exchange Connected Centres Network for
Mathematical Sciences (CCN).
Our vision: To be an outward-facing, inclusive organisation bringing the most appropriate UK-wide well-trained mathematical sciences talent to bear on challenges arising in business, industry, and government for the mutual benefit of all parties.
Our mission: The KE Hub
(1) facilitates connections between MS academics and BIG, enabling our BIG partners to harness the power of cutting-edge MS, thus benefitting
the UK economy, while stimulating MS academics through exposure to new and interesting challenges;
(2) enhances MS KE through national coordination of activities, drawing together the diverse and geographically distributed MS academic

We encourage engagement by all MS academics, irrespective of disciplinary area, location, or KE experience, and welcome BIG partners of all sizes, in all sectors and with all levels of MS expertise. We aspire to make KE routine for MS academics, and support them and BIG partners to make this a reality. We work in close partnership with the existing

| Title | KE Sandpits |
| Description | We launched a call for national KE Sandpits. These offer a significant opportunity for Mathematical Scientists to engage with Business, Industry, and Government (BIG) partners to carry out horizon-scanning on a particular challenge faced by multiple BIG partners. The aim of each two-day sandpit is to assess how the Mathematical Sciences community can contribute to the particular challenge and identify new engagement opportunities. Sandpits are designed to stimulate free thinking and discussion with the aim of developing innovative solutions to the challenges being presented. Each Sandpit is led by a consortium involving three academic Mathematical Scientists (from different UK universities) and three BIG employees (from different organisations). We have funded one Sandpit so far. It took place at the end of January 2026 and was organised around "multidimensional sensing challenges in airborne radar, multi-sensor security screening, and underwater acoustics". It involved BIG partners Leonardo, Rapiscan and Thales. |

| Title | Triage Workshops |
| Description | KE Hub Triage Workshops are online scoping sessions that take place fortnightly on Friday mornings to allow an organisation to discuss current challenges in an informal online setting with university-based mathematical scientists drawn from our academic partners across the UK. During each workshop, organisations have the opportunity to present a business or operational issue they are currently facing. There is an open invite to attend for mathematical scientists from doctoral students upwards. Since April 2025, we have organised and run 11 Triage Workshops, with partners WieldMore, HMG Ministry of Justice, Quanta Engineering, REAMC, UKAEA, MCG, Johnson Matthey, Tamesis Dock, Adia, Edinburgh Airport, and Sopra Steria. The aim is twofold: (i) to identify whether the mathematical sciences can help with the challenge and (ii) if the answer is yes, figure out who from the community should get involved in further conversations with the organisation. |

| Title | Working Groups |
| Description | We have set up three KE Hub Working Groups in (i) Scientific Computing and Optimal Control, (ii) Causal Inference, and (iii) Dynamical Systems and Topological data analysis. These started on 1 May 2025 and the intention is that they will each last for at least 2 years. Focused on a specific mathematical sciences theme, and led by a leadership consortium involving 3 academics from different universities and 3 business, industry, and government (BIG) partner reps from different organisations, they bring together further academics and BIG partners for regular online meetings, an annual workshop, and ongoing knowledge exchange. The goal is to build lasting relationships, explore applied challenges, and create opportunities for collaborative projects and recruitment. Each Working Group is led by a consortium of three academics (from different universities) and three BIG representatives (from different organisations). The benefits for Academic Participants are: (a) Direct access to topical BIG challenges and real-world problems. (b) Opportunities to apply mathematical expertise in high-impact, practical contexts. (c) Early awareness of emerging trends and industry needs. (d) Potential to co-develop funding proposals with BIG partners. The benefits for BIG Partners are: (a) Rapid evaluation of novel mathematical sciences concepts relevant to business needs. (b) Exposure to contemporary ideas, methods, and cutting-edge research. (c) Direct access to UK academic expertise and networks. (d) Opportunities to identify and recruit skilled mathematical scientists. (e) A structured setting to explore innovative solutions without immediate commercial risks. |
