BGS Engineering Geology
Lead Research Organisation:
NERC British Geological Survey
Abstract
The BGS Engineering Geology Programme undertakes an intregrated programme of mapping, testing, monitoring and modelling to describe the physical properties of the UK landmass and how it behaves in a changing climate. This is a cornerstone in our work to help society cope with climate change and population growth. Crucial to the research is ongoing work to improve the ways in which this important information is communicated to government, industry and the general public.

Description | Staff in the Geophysical Tomography Team have developed and tested a new code to determine borehole deviation from Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) data - this will be applicable to a very wide range of down-hole and cross borehole imaging applications. Many geophysical investigations using ERT require electrodes located in boreholes - but borehole deviations cause the positions of the electrodes to be uncertain to varying degrees, and often traditional deviation surveys cannot be used due to the nature of the installations. Furthermore if cross-hole ERT is being used at unstable sites (e.g. landslides, vulnerable earthworks), the borehole deviations and electrode positions can change with time. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2015GL067494/abstract;jsessionid=A43358D0B3CC1F12DAB1BF98C207F039.f01t02 http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0926985115001937 |
Exploitation Route | The capability to determine and monitor borehole deviations will enhance accuracy and image resolution wherever cross-hole ERT monitoring is used (e.g. recent work with Sellafield PLC and forthcoming work on ESIOS and Energy Research Accelerator). |

Impact | An urban geology training course was successfully delivered to the South Korean Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources in Daejeon (KIGAM). The course, drawing on expertise from Engineering Geology and Geology and Regional Geophysics, covered a range of applied urban geology themes, including engineering geology, urban groundwater, and geological characterisation. The course provides KIGAM with theoretical and practical skills to undertake further urban mapping and thematic urban characterisation in South Korea. |

PI Contribution | The Natural Hazards Partnership provides authoritative and consistent information, research and analysis on natural hazards for the development of more effective policies, communications and services for civil contingencies, governments and the responder community across the UK (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/). The BGS Engineering Geology Science directorate contributes to the NHP Hazard Impacts Modelling Group (Chair, Secretariat and scientific contributions to the landslide hazard programme - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/science/hims/), NHP Steering Group, NHP Secretariat, landslide science notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/natural-hazards/landslides/) and contributes daily the landslide component of the NHP Daily Hazard Assessment (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/). |
Collaborator Contribution | The Natural Hazards Partnership partners work in partnership to deliver four key products and services (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/) : The Daily Hazard Assessment (DHA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/), the Hazard Matrix (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/hazard-matrix/), support to the UK's National Risk Assessment (NRA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/national-risk-assessment/) and Science Notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/hazards-with-science-notes/). Partners use their specialist knowledge to provide expert advice and information to feed into these services. By working together more useful, usable and used products can be developed in an efficient way. Our challenge is to broaden the focus of natural hazards risk management from what has been predominately an early warning system towards a more holistic and integrated approach, encompassing more emphasis on risk reduction and prevention |
Impact | The Natural Hazards Partnership (NHP) works in partnership to deliver four key products and services: The Daily Hazard Assessment (DHA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/dha/), the Hazard Matrix (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/hazard-matrix/), support to the UK's National Risk Assessment (NRA - http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/products/national-risk-assessment/) and Science Notes (http://www.naturalhazardspartnership.org.uk/hazards-with-science-notes/). |
