Abstract
The BGS Engineering Geology Programme undertakes an intregrated programme of mapping, testing, monitoring and modelling to describe the physical properties of the UK landmass and how it behaves in a changing climate. This is a cornerstone in our work to help society cope with climate change and population growth. Crucial to the research is ongoing work to improve the ways in which this important information is communicated to government, industry and the general public.

| Description | Staff in the Geophysical Tomography Team have developed and tested a new code to determine borehole deviation from Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) data - this will be applicable to a very wide range of down-hole and cross borehole imaging applications. Many geophysical investigations using ERT require electrodes located in boreholes - but borehole deviations cause the positions of the electrodes to be uncertain to varying degrees, and often traditional deviation surveys cannot be used due to the nature of the installations. | Impact | An urban geology training course was successfully delivered to the South Korean Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources in Daejeon (KIGAM). The course, drawing on expertise from Engineering Geology and Geology and Regional Geophysics, covered a range of applied urban geology themes, including engineering geology, urban groundwater, and geological characterisation. The course provides KIGAM with theoretical and practical skills to undertake further urban mapping and thematic urban characterisation in South Korea. |
