Description | Findings from this grant have, for example, contributed to our knowledge and understanding of the impacts of exploitation of resources and environmental change on biodiversity, specifically: - The impacts of renewable energy (wind farms) development and fishing on sea bird populations; - The effects of climate change (drought) on vegetation communities, and soil processes and function; - Impacts of land use change and management actions of on soil biodiversity; - Impacts of light pollination on pollination services provided by moths; - Measures to conserve of rare woodland bird species; - Effects of hedgerow management on associated biodiversity; - Development of new indicators of the status of biodiversity for environmental impact assessment; - Establishment of a new national pollinator monitoring scheme; - Develop new methods to quantify the cultural services provided by habitat restoration. |
Exploitation Route | The findings of this wide ranging national capability biodiversity programme are used by a wide range of stakeholders, for example: Wider public - will benefit from improved insights into anthropogenic impacts on biodversity in laymans terms; Academics - will benefits from access to long-term data sets describing changes in populations and communities; Industry - will benefit from improved models describing the environmental impact of management and exploitation of resources on biodiversity; Policymakers - Defra family will benefit from improved understanding of land management impacts on biodiversity. These will inform management prescriptions for farmers; the new national pollinator monitoring scheme is supporting the UK National Pollinator Strategy. Policy implementers and regulators - will benefit from the new metrics for assessing biodiversity value to support improved environmental impact assessments; National Governments - will benefit from long-term population data and models describing impacts of development of marine renewables and fisheries on charismatic species; Pan-governmental - will benefit from specialist expertise and knowledge to support international biodiversity initiatives, such as IPBES. |

Description | The findings of this wide ranging national capability biodiversity programme are used by a wide range of stakeholders, for example: Defra family have used the data on hedgerow management to develop new management prescriptions for farmers. In addition, the new national pollinator monitoring scheme has provided Defra with new time trends showing changes in species distributions for over 200 pollinator species to support the UK National Pollinator Strategy. The Scottish Government has used the long-term data and models of sea bird populations to inform polices on marine renewables and fisheries in the North Sea. CEH expertise in biodiversity has supported the IPBES specialist groups on pollinators and invasive species and their recommendations to national Governments. |
