NOx Emission Measurements in Megacites using Eddy Covariance and Airborne Methods

Lead Research Organisation: NERC National Ctr for Atmospheric Sci
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description NOx emissions were measured from the BT Tower in central London for 3 months in 2017. This is the longest continuous data set obtained for direct NOx emission measurements in London to date. They have been used to show that there has been little reduction in emission from the area surrounding the BT Tower between 2012 and 2017, despite the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory predicting otherwise. Underprediction was found to be greatest during the day time, where traffic dominates the emission and as such is likely to be the section of the inventory from which the error arises.

Similar measurements have been conducted at two sites in Delhi, which is the first time direct NOx emissions measurements of this kind have been conducted in the city. These are currently being used to assess current emissions measurements and improve local inventories
Exploitation Route The methods and software developed for conduction measurements at the BT Tower will be built upon with an aim to measure for a further 5 years starting in 2020.

The results of emissions assessments in Delhi will be used in local and regional modeling and be incorporated into emissions inventories being developed for the region
