I attended COP26 in both the accredited (blue zoon) and public areas (green zone) representing Plymouth Marine Laboratory (#PML), United Kingdom Research and Innovation (#UKRI), and the UK Earth System Models project (#UKESM) to highlight the role of the ocean in climate, and how the ocean is impacted upon through climate change. I also talked about the role of Earth System Modelling in creating climate projections, and my work using ESMValTool to analyse CMIP6 data for the Sixth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment report (IPCC-AR6). |

Description | Results have informed national and international policy development, industrial decision-making and operational commercial activities. The long term investment into model development, in particular the coupling of carbon dioxide chemistry with biological and 3D physical processes has enabled PML to quickly address several key issues that are crucial to the efficient and economic development of carbon capture and storage in the UK and further afield. In particular with the UK now developing commercial scale CCS the need for scientific support has been urgent. The model has enabled PML to successfully bid into the ETI Marine Monitoring and Verification (MMV) Project, predicated on designing and building an AUV based monitoring system to detect CO2 leakage in the marine environment as well as the Horizon 2020 funded STEMM project, developing novel methods of monitoring. The model has been used to construct baselines of spatial and temporal variability of CO2 associated parameters (pH and pCO2) in the absence of sufficient observational data, which enable the development of monitoring strategies. Outputs from PML modelling have been used to provide advice to governments about pressures on fisheries under climate change, for example a Policy Note for the Government of Bangladesh. Outcomes from PML modelling have informed the Environmental Audit Committee Enquiry into the Environmental Impact of Microplastics and contributed to a UK Government POSTnote on Marine Microplastic Pollution. Outcomes from PML modelling have underpinned a formal response by Plymouth Marine Laboratory to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee enquiry on Ocean Acidification. PML supplied an expert witness, Dr Carol Turley who gave oral evidence to the committee on the 2nd March, 2017. |

Impact | The approach reported here is most suited to new farms during the licensing application period and the development of the business plan. The level of detail in the model results can provide a comprehensive evaluation of the potential impacts over a wide range of ecosystem characteristics. The approach can be customised to look at site specific characteristics (presence of deposition sensitive reef species such as pink sea fans (Eunicella verrucosa)) and can be further coupled to higher trophic level model systems such as Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) to explore wider interactions with the regional ecosystem (i.e artisanal fisheries). The model can be run for long periods (i.e. multiple growth cycles) to evaluate cumulative impacts (long-term community shifts driven by benthic-pelagic coupling or selective feeding on microzooplankton) as well as evaluating recovery pathways. The model system can be used to explore different production scenarios to feed into the company business plan as well as into the licensing procedure. These scenarios can include changes to the farm spatial configuration (i.e. orientation, rope density) to minimise long-term impacts and increase production, but also implement management approaches (i.e. staggered production) that could help maximise both production and economic profit (e.g. sustained production over longer periods to avoid market saturation and drop in prizes) |

Description | The dataset contains model projections of fish catch and abundance in European seas out to 2098 produced using the Size Spectra - Dynamic Bioclimate Envelope Model (SS-DBEM). The SS-DBEM is a mechanistic model, which means that it takes into account aspects of ecology (e.g. habitat preference, migration) and physiology (e.g. growth and reproduction) to determine biomass and distribution of fish species in response to changes in the environment (e.g. temperature, competition with other species, food availability). The SS-DBEM projects the impact of changes in the environment (e.g. warming, deoxygenation) and human activity (fishing pressure) on the abundance and biomass of modelled species. All this makes it a state of the art model in regard to projecting fish distribution and trends in both abundance and catch in response to climate change. Model outputs consist of fish abundance (number of fish per grid cell) and fish catch (number of fish caught per grid cell) considering three different fishing activity scenarios, termed the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). Whilst the model units are expressed as "Number of individuals", they are not to be used to predict actual future stocks but rather numbers relative to the initial starting values of the model. This is because the model was not intialised with actual fish numbers and subsequently the significance of this dataset is to show temporal and geographical trends, relative to other years and other grid points, in response to changes in the climate and the applied Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). In order to assess the impact of climate change, simulations under two future climate scenarios based on different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) for future greenhouse gas concentrations are conducted: the intermediate scenario, RCP4.5, in which greenhouse gas concentrations peak around 2040 before declining mainly due to successful mitigation measures in place; and the more pessimistic scenario, RCP8.5, where greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise throughout the century. Fishing activity was defined according to the MSY under these environmental conditions. The combination of MSY and RCP scenarios included in this dataset are: Global sustainability: RCP4.5 with a MSY of 0.6 (fish stock is managed globally toward sustainability) World Markets: RCP8.5 with a MSY of 0.8 (fish stock is managed globally to avoid overfishing) National Enterprise: RCP8.5 with a MSY of 1.1 (fish stocks are managed at the national level resulting in overfishing) The simulations were run using inputs from two marine hydrodynamic-biogeochemical models: the POLCOM-ERSEM and NEMO-ERSEM models. These models were driven by one Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate model (GCM) projections with downscaled atmospheric data from a regional climate model (RCM), the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) Rossby Centre Regional Atmospheric Model (RCA4). Using only one of the many possible combinations of GCM-RCM pairs leads to an incomplete estimate of the true uncertainty in the outcome in a changing climate by, most likely, indicating a smaller spread of outcomes than if the estimate were based on a larger ensemble of such GCM-RCM combinations. This does not necessarily mean a reduction in the true uncertainty, but simply an incomplete estimate of it. |

Namely the three versions of ERSEM used are the regular one complete with four phytoplankton and three zooplankton functional types and variable stoichiometry, NPZD (just one phyto- and one zooplankton group) and Fixes Stoichiometry (all plankton functional types but fixed stoichiometry within them). |

Impact | Lake Urmia is a salt lake in northwestern Iran not far from the Turkish border. It is believed to be one of the largest salt lakes on the planet. The lake has been drying out and the surrounding desert has been expanding in recent years, having a serious impact on the climate and environment of the region. In the last twenty years it has shrunk by 60% due to climate change and damming of the rivers flowing into the lake. PML is working within a NIVA led project to develop and apply modelling tools for the lake in order to help assess the environmental impact of a proposed plan to possible environmental effects of transferring water from the Caspian Sea to salt Lake Urmia to prevent it from drying out. |

The National Partnership of Ocean Prediction has an important role in understanding and defining these priorities. Our activity groups provide the fora in which the work of the research community can be coordinated, to ensure we work in a complimentary way to maximise the impact of our research and services. They are also the route through which we can understand where the gaps in understanding, tools or observations lie. This informs our own priorities, as well as providing appropriate guidance for the observations community and others. The partnership provides a means of engaging with users so that they have a good understanding of the services we provide, and we have a good understanding of how we need to develop our services to meet their needs. As a partnership we look for funding to underpin the work needed to develop the services, and have a stronger, more coherent, voice than we do as individual groups. |

Collaborator Contribution | The UK Environmental Prediction Prototype project brings together scientists from a number of environmental science organisations to accelerate the pull through and integration of national-scale high resolution environmental prediction capabilities to useful science and service. PML supports UKEP via 0.5 FTE of aligned NC. During 2018-19 PML has coupled the ERSEM marine ecosystem model to the UKEP model suite for the first time and produced test simulations. The UKEP model suite is positioned to delivery the UK's primary integrated atmosphere-terrestrial-marine prediction system in the next ~ five years. |
