High resolution studies of Massive Young Stellar Objects

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

In this project infrared and other multi-wavelength information is used to determine the properties of the direct environment of Massive Young Stellar Objects that are hidden from view at optical wavelengths. In particular, interferometric and diffraction limited data from ESO's VLT and VLT-I telescopes are combined and analysed using radiative transfer modelling.

These properties of the sample will be used to test different massive star formation evolution models and their effect on the molecular environment. Overall this project will provide a significant step forward in our understanding of the massive star formation process.

Description Article writing for 'Popular Astronomy' magazine (est. 1953)
Form Of Engagement Activity A magazine, newsletter or online publication
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach National
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact I wrote an article, reviewing a recent published press release, for publication in the magazine 'Popular Astronomy'. The magazine is pitched towards the general public, so my goal was to take a press release designed for academics and explain the findings for a general audience.

Description Demonstrator at Undergraduate Open Days
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach National
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact At undergraduate open/interview days, various demonstrations of the undergraduate lab experiments are done. As a postgraduate demonstrator, I will guide interviewees through a quick example of a 1st year lab experiment and answer any of their questions. On general open days, we show both parents and potential students simple physics experiments and answer any queries they may have about the degree/institution.

Description Development of BSL signs for astronomy
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach National
Primary Audience Other audiences
Results and Impact Through an outreach initiative funded by the Royal Astronomical Society and started by Dr. Olja Panic (University of Leeds) I assist in this workshop where we endeavoured to develop signs related to astronomy. This enables the deaf community to get more involved in current scientific discoveries and, when enough signs are developed, to better engage in astronomical research.

Description School Work Experience Involvement
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach Local
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact A work experience program is run within the department which enables PhD students to mentor school students. We introduce the students to our research and then guide them in the production of a poster describing this work. The students then present their poster (with the rest of their group) in a conference-like style poster session where postgraduates and staff attend and quiz the students on their work.
