Making and Breaking Bonds with Radicals and Anions

Abstract

This project will study coupling reactions forming C-C and C-X (X = heteroatom) bonds, without palladium catalysts. This has economic advantages as these catalysts are costly. There are also environmental advantages: (i) environmentally damaging mining of palladium will not be needed to provide catalysts for the coupling reactions and (ii) contamination of pharmaceutical intermediates by hazardous palladium residues will be avoided, thereby avoiding costly purifications.
The couplings will be facilitated under basic conditions by the presence of bespoke organic additives, leading to a potentially useful new approach in synthesis.

Description This award has allowed the advancement of the mechanism of the Stoltz-Grubbs reducing system. This has led to the publication of a paper in Angewandte Chemie - a leading journal in chemistry. Following on from this, several other interesting reactions have been discovered using the same reducing system, and these are being further explored and these are expected to lead to further publications in the future.
Exploitation Route These findings have led to further reactivity of a reducing system which were previously unreported. These findings can be used by us and/or others to advance the scope of this chemistry further.
