Hydrothermal Alteration of the Martian Crust Revealed by the SNC Meteorites

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leicester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

his project will use new nakhlite samples and other martian meteorites to further characterise the martian crust and the temperatures and conditions of water-rock interaction, comparing the results to what we are learning about Mars from remote sensing and current missions. It will use X-ray absorption, FTIR and diffraction techniques at the Diamond synchotron; and electron microscopy, Focused Ion Beam Transmission Electron Microscopy at the University of Leicester.

The project also focuses on the development of astrobiology space instrumentation, particularly the scientific techniques used within the instrument.
