Ultrafast laser microfabrication of distal-end optics for optical biopsy instruments

This is a PhD research project in physics. Using ultrafast laser inscription, the student will develop compact multifunctional micro-optic technologies for applications in advances endoscopic 'optical-biopsy' instruments. Working in collaboration with clinicians, the student will characterise the operation of the instrument and determine the success with which tissue can be classifies into normal and malignant tissue types.

Description This invention concerns an optical device comprising a unitary substrate of optically transparent material. The unitary substrate has formed therein at least one collection lens (104a to 104f) and channel (106a to 106f), the channel (106a to 106f) for receiving an optical fibre and arranged to align the optical fibre inserted therein such that the collection lens couples light collected by the collection lens (104a to 104f) into the optical fibre.
