Abstract

Understanding the physics at the smallest scale and highest energy is one of the major challenges that particle theorists face at present. While we understanding the particles and the interactions at the electroweak scales, theoretical problems remain open. In particular, we do not understand what is the physics beyond the Standard Model which can unify all the known forces. One of the most promising theories is string theory which could be realised at the highest possible energy scales in the Universe or, in the case of extra-dimension models, at the energy regime which is going to be tested by the experiments at the LHC. The aim of this project is to study the possible low energy manifestations of the string theory models, which can give signatures at the LHC, in flavour physics experiments and can have had an impact on the evolution of the Universe. By studying these experimental signals from a theoretical point of view it is possible to extract information the high energy physics and try to identify the ultimate theory beyond the Standard Model. The project will involve complex analytical computations using state of the art mathematical techniques and will resort on numerical study with the aid of computer simulations. The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology (IPPP) in Durham, has an outstanding expertise in the theoretical aspects of physics beyond the Standard Model and on its phenomenological signatures and it is an ideal place for this ambitious project
