Abstract

Power scaling femtosecond/picosecond Yb fiber lasers will enable a wide range of future materials processing applications. Key to optimising the process efficiency will be the use of tailored pulse shapes in the time domain and the use of a range of spatial modes extending beyond the traditionally used fundamental Gaussian mode. This project will employ a computer controlled industrial grade pulse shaper together with advanced amplifier structures to enable this industrial requirement to be met by Yb fiber lasers in the future. Furthermore, extending the technology beyond the pulse energy limits of a single fibre channel to potentially encompass multiple coherently combined laser outputs will further enhance the impact of the technology.
