AI based Algorithms for Histology Image Analytics

Abstract

The current 'gold standard' for diagnosis of cancer is visual analysis of histology slides under the microscope, a process that is laborious and prone to human error. This project in collaboration with our local University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, which with £1.5m investment became the first hospital in the country adopting digital slides for routine diagnostics, and Philips Digital Pathology offers a unique opportunity for technological intervention to improve the diagnostic process. In this project, the student will develop novel image analytics methods based on cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms such as deep learning that can objectively analyse the histology slides with a high degree of confidence.

The project remit falls under the stream of novel diagnostic methods, which is a major component of the EPSRC Technology Touching Life strategy. Successful completion of this project will allow the expert pathologists more time for detailed characterisation of cancerous cases leading to improved patient outcomes.
