Microstructure and nanomechanical properties of proton irradiated RPV steel

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Metallurgy and Materials

Abstract

Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steel requires good mechanical properties under irradiation conditions. The project aims to study the microstructure evolution and the consequent mechanical property under proton beam irradiation. The project will involve the collaboration between the University of Birmingham (School of Metallurgy and Materials and School of Physics) and UKAEA where facilities dedicated to irradiated materials are available. There are two aspects will be studied, viz. detailed microstructure characterisation using advanced electron microscopy and mechanical property evaluation using small scale mechanical testing. Candidates are expected to have a good background in Engineering or Physical Sciences.
