Synthesis of novel synthetic lectins for the binding and sensing of carbohydrates in water

Abstract

Prof. Davis and Ziylo have designed, patented and synthesised the world's most selective synthetic glucose binding molecule (a synthetic lectin) and are already working on utilising this fundamental chemistry to create glucose sensors. These glucose-selective synthetic lectins target binding the flat, all equatorial b -form of glucose. This project will focus on the design and preparation of novel synthetic lectins that can recognise the extended carbohydrate structures and axially orientated hydroxyl groups present in a-glucan with a view to developing selective receptors that can be used to detect the surface a-glucan of M. tuberculosis.

Results and Impact A number of sixth form (year 12) chemistry students attended an outreach day at the university. As members of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), we supervised 3 students and demonstrated how to extract caffeine from tea.

Results and Impact In July of each year, the Bristol Chemical Synthesis Center for Doctoral training holds its annual conference. Various industrial partners that provide funding for the CDT are invited to attend talks and poster presentations from students over a two day event. During my first year (2017/18), I gave a 15 minute presentation about the introduction and initial findings of my project. In the following year, I produced a poster for presentation, including updates from my research over the previous year.
