Abstract
Accurate autonomous navigation of an unmanned aerial vehicle requires the vehicle
to know its position and orientation to a commensurate accuracy. Inertial navigation
or GPS can be used to locate a vehicle to the required accuracy using high cost
equipment, but determining the orientation accurately may not be possible.
The purpose of this project is to investigate how image data can be used to rene
the low-quality position data derived from low-cost GPS equipment and so navigate
the vehicle accurately. The model being adopted is to use GPS data to nd an
approximate location, to use this to acquire static, contextual information such as
map data or previously acquired image data and nally to rene the location and
orientation.
