This project will investigate cyber-attacks against industrial control systems by exploring the latest Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) research whilst leveraging impact assessment predictions on the physical process monitoring in order to better understand the monitoring and impact analysis of cyber physical threats. The outcome of the research should be a novel approach for intrusion detection and the prevention of functional impacts on an industrial environment. It is expected that experimental activities will be undertaken to validate the outcomes.
The student will be able to spend an equivalent of 1 day a week (in block visits) at Airbus research facilities over the course of the project
The student will have access to Airbus' industrial research experts for support and guidance
The industrial supervisor for the project at Airbus will be Prof. Kevin Jones
The project/student will also participate in activities for the Research Institute of Trustworthy Industrial Control Systems (RITICS) which is coordinated by Imperial.

Description We have investigated the security and reliability of neural networks for industrial control systems. Specifically:
1) Demonstrating vulnerabilities of time series networks to adversarial examples in an intrusion detection setting. Additionally, we have examined the effects of autoregressive intrusion detection systems impose on adversarial attackers making it a challenging optimisation target.
2) We have undertaken preliminary work in examining intermediate neural network activations for detecting adversarial examples.
Exploitation Route It can be used to implement more robust AI solutions for security critical applications.
