Unconventional superconductivity in NbRe superconducting films

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Materials Science & Metallurgy

Abstract

The PhD project involves a systematic study on the sputtering growth of nanometre thick NbRe superconducting films on different single crystal substrates. The aim is to explore unconventional superconductivity which is predicted in NbRe due to its non-centrosymmetric crystal structure which should support p-wave symmetry states in pristine samples or within single grains. The research will involve extensive materials characterisation including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and electronic transport across a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. The project forms part of a wider collaboration with Italy and Japan through an EPSRC-JSPS International Network Grant.
