Quantum Simulations of Gauge Field Theories with Superconducting Circuits

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

In this PhD project in quantum theory, we want to explore the possibilities for simulating quantum lattice gauge theories in superconducting circuits. A particular interest here will be to simulate quantum chromo-dynamics. The task will thus be to design suitable circuits and show how their quantum dynamics can emulate the desired theory. This will be completed by assessing the robustness of a potential realization with respect to noise sources that will inevitably be present in an experiment and by devising suitable ways for verifying the functionality of the quantum simulator via measurements. The project will also involve collaborations with other research groups that do the related experiments, for example at ETH Zurich.
