Search for Supersymmetry at ATLAS in final states with tau leptons

Abstract

The student's project will be part of the ATLAS SUSY working group. The student will search for evidence of
physics beyond the standard model (BSM) at ATLAS in electro-weak produced events where SUSY particles
decay to one of more tau leptons. The student will look at various different signatures: directly produced
staus (which later decay to taus); stau production mediated by Charginos and Neutralinos. The student will
focus in particular in the final states where one tau decays hadronically and one decays leptonically. The
student will device optimal strategies for defining signal regions where BSM events are enhanced with respect
to backgrounds, and also estimate the backgrounds via definition of appropriate control regions. It is
anticipated that the student will spend between 6 and 12 months at CERN in their second year of the
studentship.
