Abstract

Project Summary: Damping is a key parameter that influences the vibration behaviour of a gas turbine component. The main contributions to the total damping of a component are aerodynamic damping, mechanical damping and material damping. The key stages of the project are as follows:
1. Characterise the material damping properties of the primary structural carbon-fibre reinforced epoxy resin material used in the current composite components.
2. Develop a method for the prediction of material damping for a composite component.
3. Complete validation testing and validate analysis methods against experimental tests.
