High fidelity Multiphysics Fuel Performance and Nuclear Thermal-Hydraulics Modelling for Light Water Reactors and Small Modular Reactors

Abstract

This PhD project aims at coupling the RELAP5-3D code, a system code which is able to model the entire primary system using a quite coarse mesh, with the COBRA TF code, a sub-channel code that allows a finer nodalization. These codes will also be coupled to a fuel performance code as well to provide coupling with the thermal-mechanical response of nuclear fuel rods. Currently these codes are not closely coupled and having a more integrated coupling framework will enable higher fidelity multiphysics models of small modular reactors to be performed for both normal operational behaviour and design basis accidents (DBAs).
