Investigating the epoch of galaxy formation using artificial intelligence

Abstract

The overall aim of the project is to find the galaxies responsible for the submillimetre sources detected by the Herschel Space Observatory, using new AI techniques that the student will develop. The objectives are as follows: 1) develop a new machine-learning/AI technique to find the galaxies responsible for the submillimetre sources detected by Herschel; 2) use this technique to find the galaxies responsible for the 200,000 submillimetre sources detected by the Herschel ATLAS project close to the South Galactic Pole; 3) estimate the redshifts of these sources using the technique of photometric sources; 4) investigate galaxy evolution by using this sample to estimate key statistical measures of the galaxy population, such as the luminosity function and the dust-mass function, and see how these evolve with redshift; 5) answer key questions about galaxy evolution, such as when and how galaxies were formed in the first place, and how and why they have changed over time. The key new methodology that will be developed during the course of the PhD with be the AI/machine-learning techniques.
