Environmental politics, inclusion and ideologies and in transforming to sustainable solid waste management in Dehradun, India.

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

Through an Urban Political Ecology approach, the proposal aims to explore how the concept of nature is tied into socio-cultural and political environmental narratives, directed by the intentions of various stakeholders, following a plastic-segregation-programme targeting 100,000 citizens in a small northern (Indian) city, executed by the local NGO 'Waste Warriors', as part of a 50 city project funded by the United-Nations-Development-Programme and Hindustan-Coca-Cola. A key question for the project involves the study of how power relations, interests, and capacities of local actors shape the formal-informal Sustainable Waste Management (SWM) economy and translate as drivers or barriers for sustainable SWM.
