Ion transport through carbon nanotubes

Abstract

Previous research undertaken as part of Masters project involved the electrochemical analysis of polyoxometalates encapsulated in single-walled carbon nanotubes. The influence of various supporting electrolytes with different combinations of cations and anions were studied, providing insight into how the different ions transport through the carbon nanotubes.
There will be a continuation of this work throughout the project, so that a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of different supporting electrolytes on the electrochemistry of POM@SWNT composites can be delivered.
Initial areas of interest are to study the POM@SWNT composites in acidic electrolytes and their deutrated equivalents, to understand the isotopic affects of the electrolyte on the system.
A priority is to understand how ions, protons especially, are able to interact with the encapsulated POM. This research will hopefully include evidence of protons being able to diffuse through the hexangonal lattices found along the nanotube walls.
