Applications of Proton Transfer Mass Spectrometry to Chamber Studies of Gas Phase Oxidation Processes

Abstract

Studies of complex reaction mechanisms, such as those involved in the atmospheric oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by anthropogenic and biogenic sources, require sensitive and selective detection techniques which are able to respond to changes in concentrations on rapid timescales. Simulation chambers equipped with such instrumentation enable detailed kinetic and mechanistic knowledge of the atmospheric chemistry required to understand air quality and climate.

In this project, the capabilities of the Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) will be enhanced by coupling a proton transfer mass spectrometer (PTrMS), enabling measurements of a greater number of primary species and oxidation products, and on a faster timescale, than is currently possible. This work will make detailed investigations of the kinetics and mechanisms of gas phase oxidation processes involved in the atmospheric chemistry of VOCs such as isoprene and 2-methyl-3-butenol (MBO) emitted by biogenic sources, as well as those emitted by anthropogenic sources relating to vehicle use.
