GDF-derived gas migration through salt host rock and interactions with salt-bearing geological environments

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Earth Sciences

Abstract

There are a number of options for the geological storage of nuclear waste. One approach is to use salt as a host rock owing to its low permeability. However, evidence is emerging that gas and water can migrate through salt, and the mechanisms controlling this are therefor of great interest. This PhD project involves exploring some of the mechanisms which may control migration of gas through salt. The project will involve both experimental ad theoretical modelling, and some use of field analogues and field observations.
