Towards Gender Inclusive Healthcare: Improving Transgender healthcare education amongst medical students

The research aims to understand medical student and transgender
user perspectives on gender non-conforming healthcare user
experiences, and to explore models for successful training
opportunities for medical students. Working within a constructivist
perspective, this research will conduct focus group interviews with
members of the Newcastle Transgender community, in order to
understand their experiences of interacting with healthcare
providers. This data will then be turned into case study materials
that will be incorporated into a training workshop for medical
students, enabling them to role-play doctor-patient interactions
with Transgender patients. The focus group interviews and data
collected during the workshops (participant observation data,
survey data and elite interview data), will be analysed to develop a
deeper understanding of medical student and transgender user
perspectives on gender non-conforming healthcare experiences
and to reflect upon the utility of the workshops as a means of
enacting cultural change in professional practice, with a particular
focus on enhancing contemporary medical pedagogy to become
more trans-inclusionary.
