Searches for charged lepton flavour violation on the mu2e experiment

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The Mu2e experiment looks for charged lepton flavour violation by looking for the neutrinoless conversion of a muon to an electron in the field of a nucleus. Lepton flavour violation has been observed in the neutral sector through neutrino oscillations but it has not yet been observed in the charged sector. The rate allowed in the Standard Model is well below the level that experiments can currently reach so any observation would be a sign of new physics. The experiment is currently under construction and aims to start commissioning in 2021. The project has a specific focus on installing and commissioning the stopping target monitor (one of the detectors being provided for the experiment by the UK) with involvement in writing both the DAQ and DQM as well as offline analysis code. There will also be data analysis both of test beam data taken before the installation into the experiment as well as analysis of the initial data taken by the experiment during the commissioning period.
