To what extent are the mental health needs of children and young people (aged 11-18) in care being supported?

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

This study will examine the mental health needs of children and young people (CYP) in care,
the extent to which these needs are being met, and the effect of multiple placements on
mental health interventions, informed by a mixed-methods study design.

The project will demonstrate what mental health services are currently available to CYP in
care and the importance of consistency in treatment across multiple placements. The findings
will be particularly valuable to social care and mental health professionals, and to the CYP
themselves, due to the growing importance being placed on mental health and well-being. A
report summarising the results will be shared with CYP and social care staff involved in the
project. Findings will be disseminated through publications, conference presentations and
internal seminars.
