Abstract

In all motors used for propulsion or traction, a significant reduction in motor size can be achieved by increasing the operating speed. This reduced size leads to improved power density, less material usage and lighter systems. However as speeds rise, rotor stresses, bearing wear and rotordynamic stability become significant design challenges while as size reduces, assembly tolerances, component sizes and sources of imbalance increase. This PhD will investigate novel, miniaturised rotor designs for high speed domestic appliances, utilising novel materials, topologies and manufacturing processes to control cost and deliver high performance, reliable miniature rotor structures.
