ARIADNE and dual phase optical readout for future neutrino liquid argon detectors

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The ERC ARIADNE project has developed and demonstrated a gamechanging optical readout solution to two-phase LAr detectors that
offers a highly cost effective option for the future colossal neutrino
liquid argon detectors. A further optimisation and scale up of the
optical readout will take place at the CERN neutrino platform using a
5mx5mx1m cryogenic vessel. The student will join the ARIADNE
program and will participate in the construction and running of the
large-scale liquid argon experiment at CERN. The student will gain a
detailed understanding of pressurized liquid noble gas systems and
operate and calibrate the cryogenic liquid argon detector. The
student will optimise further the optical readout technology, perform
liquid argon event reconstruction studies and analysis of data
collected at CERN. For this PhD position it is expected that a year will
be spent at CERN.
