The Atmospheric Chemistry of Venus and Venus-like Exoplanets

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Institute of Astronomy

Abstract

In this project, I will work with collaborators to model the atmospheric chemistry of Venus by applying and extending existing software for planetary atmospheres.

I will address a number of unsolved problems in the Venus atmosphere:

- fitting chemical mixing ratios as a function of altitude that have not yet been explained
- exploring possibilities for alien life in the clouds of Venus
- investigating the surface-atmosphere interaction on Venus
- extending the analysis to the atmospheres of Venus-like exoplanets around K- and M-Type host stars

A number of these investigations are already well under way, and the project is open ended with the future direction being determined by our results from these investigations.
